Nancy Louise McKenna passed away at home with her husband
and sister at her side on Friday, December 27, 2013, at the age
of 61, following an eight year courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born in San Mateo, CA to Frank A. and Betty J. Diehl and
raised in San Bruno, CA. She graduated from Oceana High School
in Pacifica, CA in 1970, and for the next 17 years, worked as an
Administrative Assistant at several large firms within the San Francisco
Bay Area. Nancy moved to Grand Junction in 1987, where she met
Robert (Bob) McKenna. They married on October 15, 1988, and
celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year.
She was employed by Agapito Associates, Inc. in Grand Junction as
an Office Specialist from 1988 to 1997. In mid-1988, after completing
the Leading Edge Business Course at the Business Incubator, Nancy
embarked on a new venture and launched her company, Office
Dynamics, assisting small start-up businesses in marketing, office
space logistics and overall management and organization. She provided
contract services to a wide range of clients, working extensively with
the Business Incubator serving as Executive Secretary to the Director.
Because of her failing health, Nancy dissolved her business in 2012.
When Nancy wasn’t working you could find her in the garden or the
kitchen, with her devoted dogs tagging along. She and her husband spent
countless hours planting, nurturing and harvesting their annual garden,
sharing their bounties with others. She was known for her exceptional
“pickled beets”. Nancy loved to cook and enjoyed experimenting with
new recipes on family and friends who delighted in the end results. She
was fondly referred to by her sister as the “appetizer queen”.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her
husband, Bob; sister, Judi Edwards (Keith) of Grand Junction, CO;
nephew, Matthew Edwards of Clifton, CO; two step-children, Alison
and Conor McKenna of Denver, CO; two step-grandchildren, LeAndra
and Delanee McKenna of Denver, CO; two aunts, Marie Cole (Jim)
of Littleton, CO, and Raiann Young of Grand Junction, CO; cousins,
Herb Fischer (Cheryl) of Corona del Mar, CA, Ruth Gilbert (Ed) and
Ray Gilbert (Dixie) of Grand Junction, CO; Harold Gilbert (Christa)
of Blowing Rock, N.C., and Mary Kay Phelps of Southern CA; other
extended family members and her longtime friend, Rosie Wheeler
(Art) of Redwood City, CA.
The family would like to thank Nancy’s oncologist, Dr. Melancon; the
physicians, RNs, and staff at St. Mary’s Pavilion, St. Mary’s Hospital
and HopeWest Hospice for their special care.
Nancy developed and cherished countless friendships throughout the
years. Memories of her will forever be treasured in the hearts of those
whose lives she touched. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.
At Nancy’s request, no funeral services will be held.
