Ronald Peter Piel, 1929-2014.
Ronald was born to Peter and Beatrice Coyle-Piel in the rural town of Central Islip, N. Y. He spent his childhood and early adult life hunting and fishing the Great South Bay with his lifelong companions Ted and Charlie. Their adventures were epic.
During World War II Ron tried very hard to join the Air Force but was turned away as under aged. He did manage to join the NY State Guard and attend the training for sergeant in May 1945 at the age of 15.
After the war, Ron became a game keeper at a private hunting preserve and learned the old world Scottish method of raising thousands of pheasants and mallards and to train retrievers.
In 1954 he signed up to join the Air Force (again) but a letter was already in the mail from Uncle Sam instructing him to report the Army. He served from 1951 to 1953 in the Big Red One Division, 16th Infantry Regiment with the rank of corporal.
After his service, Ron learned the carpentry trade from his uncle Jim Hadden, which would introduce him to all phases of construction including housing, schools, churches, bridges and dams.
In 1956, Ron married Lorraine Janke and they had two daughters--Pat and Sue. In 1960, the Piels moved north of Dotsero where Ron build a home along the Colorado River for his family. It was here he developed his love for big game hunting. He never failed to fill the freezer with meat.
When Ron and Lorraine became empty-nesters, they bought a cattle ranch in Nucla. It was a wonderful 14 years and Ron again developed his hunting skills to become a predator shooter. In 2010 Ron and Lorraine sold the Nucla ranch and bought a small farm in Loma.
Ron passed away on Aug. 30 at La Villa Grand Care Center after a seven-year struggle with dementia. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Peter and Beatrice; his brother Gregory; his sister Helen; and his hunting partners Ted Doelger and Charlie Piazza.
He is survived by his wife Lorraine; his daughter and son-in-law Pat and Kevin Doak; his daughter Sue Gaugh; his granddaughters Jessica Gaugh and Sadie Christensen; and four great-grandchildren Kyra, Elyse, Kyler and Zephyr; his sisters-in-law Dorothy Doelger and Janet Boyle; and cousins Pat and Bob Algar.
There will be no formal services at Ron's request. A small private family service will be held on the Flattops at a later date.
Ron's family would like to thank all the staff members at La Villa Grande Care Center, Hope West Hospice and Senior Daybreak Daycare program for all their compassionate and loving care of Ron.
