Obituaries

Eagle Valley Enterprise - November 26, 1926

Mrs. Grace Pierce, the heroic woman who less than a week before had so bravely met the calamity of a broken ankle joint, was last Saturday called upon to face a still more grave misfortune, that of the death of her husband, Geo. E. Pierce, who met death at his post of duty, Saturday, November 20, when the Rock creek bridge on the Moffat road gave away, carrying with it a string of freight cars, which by their weight dragged the engine in after them. The engineer and fireman were slightly injured. Mr. Pierce, the brakeman, was killed. The news of the tragedy was broken as gently as it is possible to break such news to the bereaved woman, as she lay in her bed at the Hockett home with her ankle still in splints and her whole body still racked from the shock of her accident. And as she had met the former misfortune bravely, she she continued to be brave in this. The body of Mr. Pierce was not recovered until Sunday, when it was taken to Oak Creek and later shipped to Denver, where the remains will be held until the first of the month, when it is hoped Mrs. Pierce will have her ankle in a cast and can be moved to Denver, from where the funeral will be conducted December 1.
