Sybil Setterlind
1939-2014
Sybil Setterlind, a former resident of Eagle, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on the evening of Oct. 21 in Denver.
Sybil was born at home in Norway, MI, on Oct. 1, 1939, to Einer and Astrid Anderson, where she began a life filled with love, courage and the inspirational desire to care for others.
Sybil groomed her care-giving talents by loving and protecting her little sister Yvonne in their humble home in Norway and sought to share her gift of making others feel better by enrolling in the University of Northern Michigan’s nursing school.
While nursing allowed Sybil to use her comforting touch and words with thousands of patients over her career, it was her role as a mother of seven children - Loree (Viau), Lisa (Nolan), Todd (Mercier), Lynn (Arguello), Tracey (Mercier), Erik (Setterlind) and Kristina (Levy); that will keep her memory and legacy alive for generations.
After brief stops in Newberry and Bellaire, MI, Sybil settled down on a quiet corner on the southside of Escanaba, MI. Through two marriages and the inherent chaos of raising four daughters and three sons as a single mother, Sybil always stood strong and proud like her favorite flower - the sunflower - and her smile shone bright and warmed the hearts of everyone around her.
As Sybil’s nest emptied one by one, she followed some of her birdies and moved to Colorado to start a new adventure. The small town girl quickly made friends in Denver and Eagle, where her disposition was a perfect fit in one of the sunniest places in the country.
Sybil’s warmth touched many lives and her kindness and work ethic will continue to spread through her children and 16 grandchildren. Please honor Sybil’s life by doing one of the most simple, but also the most healing acts you can do for yourself and others - smile.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. at Mountain Valley Lutheran Church, 802 Brush Creek Terrace in Eagle with a celebration to follow at 0323 Lime Park Drive, Eagle Ranch. Please bring a drink and dish to pass.
