Karen Sue Yutzy
May 27, 1953– October 27, 2013
Karen Sue Yutzy entered the eternal presence of her Heavenly Father on Sunday, October 27, 2013. She courageously battled brain cancer for seven and one half years, fighting the good fight. She was surrounded by her loved ones at home at her passing. She was 60 years old.
Karen's contagious smile entered this world on May 27, 1953, to Kenneth Gordon and Maxine Oberly Sorter. She attended Central High School, where she enjoyed being in the choir and on the drill team. She graduated in 1971. She attended Mesa Junior College, double majoring in Music and Home Economics. Karen married the love of her life, Paul Vernon Yutzy, II, on June 29, 1973. They spent the next two years in Germany, where Paul was stationed with the US Army. They were able to do some traveling in Europe, memories that Karen always treasured. Paul and Karen returned to Grand Junction in June 19 75, right before the birth of their first daughter, Rachelle, in December 1975. Paul and Karen made Clifton their permanent home and have lived there for 37 years, and had three more children, Erin, Brian and Heather.
Karen did daycare in the early years. She went to work for Community Hospital as an insurance biller in 1988, where she worked with her best friends, Suzy Cooper and Judy Johnson, until 2001, when she went to work, again as an insurance biller, for Foresight Family Physicians. She worked at Foresight until October 2006.
Karen enjoyed baking, wreath making and other crafts, cooking, reading, and sewing. She made her own clothes growing up, and then continued to make clothes for her children as they grew up. She even made the dresses for her girls' weddings. In Karen's final days, she took great joy in all of her grandchildren and sharing an interest in their various activities.
Karen is survived, and loved immeasurably, by her husband, Paul; her four children, Rachelle (Kenny); Erin (Jeremy); Brian (Renee), and Heather (Greg); ten grandchildren, Cortney, Preston, Megan, Jazmyne, Connor, Jonah, Kylie, Jaylynn, Taylor, and Cameron; her four siblings, Kenda (Ralph); Gordon (Alpha); Lloyd (Betty), and Ralph. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law, Gloria.
There will be a graveside service for Karen at Grand Junction Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, October 30th, at 1:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be at The Messiah Lutheran Church at 840 11th Street, on Friday, November 1st, at 1:00 p.m. Both services are open to the public.
Flowers can be sent to Messiah Lutheran. Contributions in Karen's memory can be made directly to the Messiah Lutheran School.
