Nellie P. Smith, 93, Delta, died May 4, 2014, at Delta County
Memorial Hospital.
A rosary will be said at 6 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Paonia. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the
church. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss.
Survivors include one son, Mark of Hotchkiss; two daughters,
Jeneen Joseph of Spring, Texas, and Kathleen Smith of Orderville,
Utah; one sister, Edith Lindsey of Montrose; five grandchildren;
and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Lifetime North Fork Valley resident,
Nellie P. Smith, passed away
on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at the
Delta County Memorial Hospital
in Delta. She was 93.
A rosary will be recited at 6:00
p.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Paonia. A Mass of Christian Burial
will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday,
May 7, 2014, also at Sacred Heart. Burial will follow at the Riverside
Cemetery in Hotchkiss.
Nellie Pagotto was born to Mark and Regina (DaLava) Pagotto on
April 4, 1921, in Somerset, Colorado. She attended school in Somerset
and Paonia. She was the recipient of the Wilson Rockwell Cup in the
Paonia class of 1939. Nellie furthered her education at Western State
College in Gunnison where she received her bachelor’s degree in education.
Her teaching career included several years as a Spanish teacher
at Hotchkiss High School, and many more years substituting.
On December 27, 1948, Nellie married Edward “Sheldon” Smith
at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Hotchkiss. To this union, a
son and two daughters were born. They made their home and raised
their family on Rogers Mesa, near Hotchkiss. The couple celebrated
their 44th wedding anniversary before Sheldon’s passing on March 31,
1993.
Nellie enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, cooking for her family and
visiting with friends. More importantly, she was a devoted wife and
loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She leaves behind
her beloved church family at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Nellie is survived by two daughters, Jeneen Joseph and her husband,
John of Spring, TX and Kathleen Smith and her husband, Glen Chamberlain
of Orderville, UT; son, Mark Smith and his wife, Tammy of
Hotchkiss, and one sister, Edith Lindsey of Montrose. Nellie is further
survived by five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and several
nieces and nephews.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Sheldon, and her parents.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Nellie’s
memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service
and Crematory.
