John “Johnny” B. Chiaro,
age 93, long time resident of
Grand Junction, passed away
on Monday, December 2, 2013,
after a long illness.
He grew up on a small vegetable
farm on River Road. He was fifth
in line in a family of nine, born to
Italian immigrants.
John attended Grand Junction
High School, then Ross Business College on a scholarship.
President Roosevelt offered him an office job with the National
Youth Association (NYA). He suited up everyday and walked back
and forth to work in town.
WWII came, and changed John’s job situation right after Pearl
Harbor. He joined the Navy, and soon he had Ensign after Chiaro.
The Navy gave John the opportunity to earn a business degree from
Tulane University, and most importantly, over a period of ten years,
from 1942 – 1952, he moved up to the rank of Lt. Senior grade.
As a civilian, John obtained a franchise from A & W Rootbeer.
He helped build the drive-in in Montrose, CO and managed it for
several years before he retired.
His love for the farm he grew up on and the vegetables it produced
beckoned him to buy and improve a farm. The idea caught on.
He sold the first farm and repeated the process for the rest of his
working years.
John loved sports, bowling, golfing, horseshoes, biking, tennis,
softback, and dancing. He had earned, with pride, many senior
Olympic medals. Throughout the years, he took up the hobby
of cutting stones, specializing in polishing Colorado shale, for
relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rosina
Chiaro; two brothers, Frank and Tony; sisters, Jennie Chiaro; Mary
Colosimo, and Sylvia Baldwin.
John never married. He is survived by three sisters, Lucy Shuey,
Rosie Loitz, and Angie Sinnott, all from California; 24 nieces, and
nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews, and six first cousins
living in Lamezia Terme, Italy.
Services will be held at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary at 10:00 a.m. on
December 7. Burial will follow.
