Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 7B Obituary - December 7, 2013

Richard Paul Sparn was born on February 4, 1930, in Denver, CO,
the third son of E. Ted and Martha Hayes Sparn. At age three, the
family moved to Grand Junction, and Dick attended St. Joseph’s
School, GJHS, Mesa Jr. College and CU-Boulder.
Dick spent five and one half years in the Air Force during the
Korean War as a first Lieutenant, and was proud of his military
service. After his discharge, he worked for Martin-Marietta as an
electrical engineer in the space program.
He met his wife, Lee McLeod, in Denver and they were married on
September 3, 1960, in Grand Junction. In 1964, the family relocated
to Grand Junction when Dick joined the family shoe business. His
father and brothers operated shoe stores on the western slope until
their retirement in 1992.
Dick was very active in the downtown community and was a long
time member of Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce. He was
an original board member of Bridge House, a long time member
of the Brownson Memorial Fund Board, and served on the first
VCB Board. In 1991, he was honored as “Downtown Retailer of
the Year”.
Dick is survived by his wife of 53 years; three children, Sandy
(Gary) Parkerson; David (Sherry) Sparn, and Diane Sparn. He
is also survived by five grandchildren, Dr. Tonya (Casey) Wren,
Tom and Eric Parkerson, Russell (Morgan) Woodley and James
(Sarah) Curtis; and four great-grandsons. He also leaves behind his
brother, Edwin, of Connecticut; sisters-in-law, Bets Sparn, Merle
(Art) Pearce, and Myrtle Fisher. Many nieces and nephews and a
multitude of friends will mourn his loss.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, and sistersin-
law, Donald (Mickey) and Theodore (Clarice); a beloved nephew,
Bruce Pearce and great-nephew, Christopher Hamilton.
Dick will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul, and an
exemplary husband and father. He was raised in the Catholic faith
and lived a good Christian life. His family was the joy of his life and
he was so proud of his children and grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later
date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to
HopeWest Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 3090B N. 12th St.,
