Hotchkiss, Colorado resident, JoAnn M. Clark, passed away Dec. 13 at her residence. She was 89.
A graveside memorial service was held Dec. 19 at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Gypsum.
JoAnn May Phillips was born Sept. 2, 1925 at her grandparent’s home in west Glenwood Spring. She was the first born and only girl of Myrtle (Hight) Phillips and James F. Phillips.
Her parents and grandparents were in the lumber and saw milling business. She often said she had a great childhood — running wild in the woods in the summer and starting school and living in the small town of Gypsum in the winter. She went through schooling in Gypsum and graduated from Eagle County High School in 1943. She went to work in San Diego building airplanes for Consolidated Volunteer Aircraft. Jack Clark (her sailor boy and high school sweetheart) got shore duty and 30 days leave so they married on March 23, 1945 in Reno, Nevada on the way to Colorado to visit relatives during his leave. When Jack got out of the Navy, it was hurry up, pack and move back to Colorado when he found out when hunting season started.
They lived in the Eagle Valley including Eagle and Gypsum. Jack preceded her in death in March 1989. In 1999, JoAnn moved to Hotchkiss where she resided until her death.
JoAnn enjoyed reading, studying and traveling the Southwest. She also enjoyed spending time at Lake Powell. She was the family historian. Most of all, JoAnn enjoyed being with her family.
JoAnn is survived by her son, Joe Clark and spouse, Melody of Grand Junction; her daughter, Jean Ceriani and spouse, Philip of Hotchkiss; a brother, John Phillips and spouse, Betty of Lakewood; two sisters-in-law: Johnette Phillips of Eagle and Sharon Phillips of Garfield, N.M.; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, Myrtle and James Phillips; her husband, Jack Clark and two brothers: Jim Phillips and Jack Phillips.
The family suggests memorial contributions to be made in JoAnn’s memory to HopeWest Hospice, P. O. Box 24, Delta, Colorado or Delta County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Attn: Oncology Department, P. O. Box 10100, Delta, Colorado 81416.
