Douglas Kirk Simonton, 64, of Wilmington, Del., passed away peacefully Dec. 12 with his family at his side. Doug attended Wilmington Friends School and graduated from Lawrence Academy and Bowdoin College, where he was a member of the varsity squash team and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He retired from a long career with Simonton Insurance and was a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter. He was fourth-generation member of the Rotary Club of Wilmington.

Doug was an avid skier and enjoyed the outdoors, spending many ski seasons in Vail and a summer at Hurricane Island Maine Outward Bound. He also enjoyed trapshooting, sailing, cooking, gardening and reading. Doug loved to travel and spent time in South America, Europe and Hawaii, where he built a home in Hilo. He was an active member of Christ Church Christiana Hundred, where he served as an usher.

Douglas is survived by his mother, Marguerite “Daisy” Simonton. He is also survived by his brother Scott and his wife Renee, and his brother Jeffrey. He was very fond of his nephews and niece, Will and wife Angela, Emily and Ryan. The family would like to thank Doug’s friends and caregivers for their friendship and support during his lifetime. Burial will be private followed by a memorial service to celebrate his life at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Buck Road, Greenville, Del., Saturday at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions in celebration of Doug’s life to be made St. Francis Hospital, 701 North Clayton St., Wilmington, DE 19805.
