John Bakios
August 27, 1922 - April 23, 2014
John Bakios was born in North Reading, Massachusetts on August 27th, 1922, to Greek immigrants Stavros Bakios and Florence Louvaris.
He was the third born of eight sons.
Beginning at age 21, John joined the Army and was stationed in Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe during World War II. Part of the 94th Infantry Division under command of General Patton, John was a member of Patton’s “Golden Nugget” team. As a Staff Sergeant, John engaged in many battles including the Battle of the Bulge. John earned three medals in battle, including one Purple Heart before his honorable discharge on December 31, 1945.
Before his retirement at age 62, John worked at Malden Mills for 30 years as a shipping and receiving supervisor in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
Malden Mills was the first textile company to introduce the
Polar Fleece material widely used today. John and his wife moved to Grand Junction in 2002, to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren
whom reside in Aspen, Colorado. After the move, John became a parishioner of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.
On April 23rd John passed away in the Community Living Center at the Veteran’s Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, June Bakios; daughters, Pamela Bakios of Snowmass Village and Barbara Bakios-Wickes (Steven Wickes) of Aspen; grandchildren, Andrew Wickes of Berlin, Germany, and Whitney Wickes of Denver, and brothers, Demitri Bakios of Derry, New Hampshire, and Petro Bakios of Reno, Nevada.
The visitation and memorial service will be held at Callahan-Edfast this Sunday, April 27th from 6 - 8:00p.m. Religious services will follow on Monday at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church beginning at 10:30 a.m. John will have a veteran’s burial at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Grand Junction near Riverside Parkway at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 2nd.

John Bakios, 91, Grand Junction, died April 23, 2014, at the
Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Visitation-Trisagion will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Callahan- Edfast Mortuary Chapel. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado.
Mr. Bakios was a supervisor in the textile industry.
He is survived by his wife, June B.; two daughters, Pamela Bakios of Snowmass Village and Barbara Bakios-Wickes of Aspen; two brothers, Peter of Reno, Nev., and James of Dairy, N.H.; and two grandchildren.
