Keith Wayne Miller, 87, of
Grand Junction passed away at
the Grand Junction VA Medical
Center on December 23, 2013.
He was born in Delta, Colorado
on January 26, 1926, to Fred and
Buena Miller. He left Delta
High School prior to graduation
to serve in the United States
Navy during World War II, he
served aboard the destroyer,
USS Metcalf, and was injured
aboard ship. After the war he
attended Mesa College and
earned his teaching credentials at
Colorado State Teachers College
in Greeley.
He married Gladys Mae
Henshaw on September 12, 1948,
and started his teaching career in
Lamar, Colorado shortly
thereafter. In 1953, he contracted
poliomyelitis during the national
pandemic and moved to Grand Junction following his recovery
from polio. He taught history at
Grand Junction High School and was part of the initial faculty at
Central High School where he
also served as the track and field coach. He earned his Masters
Degree in Counseling from Greeley and was a guidance counselor
at Grand Junction High until 1965. That year he was appointed
as the director of continuing education at Mesa College where
he touched many lives through his creation of programs to train
tradesman in many disciplines.
Following his retirement from Mesa College, he taught stained
glass for several years at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico and
maintained a glass studio in Grand Junction. Many of his creations
can still be seen around town.
He was a member of the Grand Junction Lion’s Club for many
years and especially enjoyed his work with the annual Lions Club
Carnival.
Keith is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gladys; a son, Steve
of Glendale, AZ; a daughter, Meredith of Grand Junction; two
grandchildren, Amy Miller and KeriAnn Totton; and five greatgrandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers, the family
asks that donations be made in his name to the Roice-Hurst Humane
Society, 362 28 Road, Grand Junction, CO.
