Juanita Eaton, 88 of Gypsum, passed away on Feb. 15, at Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale, where she had been in ill health for several months.

Elsie Juanita Sixkiller was born in the Gypsum Valley on June 24, 1926, to Ned and Ida (Clark) Sixkiller. She was raised in the valley, attended the Upper Gypsum School and graduated from Eagle County High School in May of 1944.

On November 9, 1944, she married Wren Eaton of Gypsum and they raised four children: Shirley Anne (Pete) Nolan, Donald Wren (Gail) Eaton, Kathy Sue Smith and Danny Lee (Deena) Eaton.

Juanita worked as a cook/cafeteria manager for Eagle Valley High School in Gypsum for 20 years. She always said they cooked “real” food and the staff/students alike would sneak down to the cafeteria for a fresh baked bun or cinnamon roll because they could smell the bread throughout the building.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed helping to prepare many church dinners and helped with bazaars. Juanita had a green thumb and raised many beautiful flowers.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Wren, a baby sister, brothers Richard and Sam Sixkiller, sister-in-law Ellen Faye Sixkiller, son-in-law Clifford Smith and niece Frances Sixkiller.

Survivors include her four children and spouses all of Gypsum, sister-in-law Laura Sixkiller of Longmont, niece Mary Ellen Sixkiller of Longmont, nephews Bill and Ned Sixkiller of Craig as well as grandchildren: Erica (Heath) Mosness, Wren (Angie) Bindley, Foster Bindley, Chad (Jennifer) Eaton, John Eaton, Cory (Mandi) Nolan, Hannah (Jeff) Waltz and Alissa Eaton.

She is also survived by sixteen great-grandchildren: Jayden and Brenna Mosness, Avari and Quentin Bindley, Joel and Alexandra Bindley, Clayton Oleson, Paige and Beau Eaton, Cody Ann and Bruce Eaton, April Sandoval-Eaton, Kennedy Waltz, Bryson Eaton, and Melayna and Drayke Medina. Another great-granchild is due in March.

Funeral services will be held at Gypsum United Methodist Church on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m., with burial to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Gypsum.

Family suggests memorial contributions be made in Juanita’s memory to the March Of Dimes.

Farnum Holt Funeral Home in Glenwood Springs has been entrusted with these arrangements.
