Ellsworth “Al” F. Stein, age 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 15, 2014, at St. Mary’s Hospital.
He was born April 14, 1920, to Ira and Isabel (Ladusire) Stein in Schofield, WI. Al grew up in Edgar, WI, with six siblings. He took tremendous joy in hunting and fishing. He was a leader in his class at Edgar High School.
After graduation, Al joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, and in 1944, enlisted in the US Navy. Upon completing boot camp, he was selected as one of six men to be trained in what was at that time, a highly classified detection system, now commonly known as radar.
He served on the Meriweather, APA203. The USS Meriweather participated in the invasion of Okinawa. Al completed his service with the Navy in 1946.
Al then enlisted in the US Air Force from 1946 – 1950 and served during the Korean War. The United States Atomic Energy Commission recruited him and for 22 years he worked with physicists in the development of atomic science and technology. His last assignment brought him to Grand Junction, CO in the late 1960’s and he retired in 1972. He then joined Bendix Corporation, retiring in 1980.
Al was a Mason, as well as an active member of the Western Colorado Shrine Club and the Jesters. He was a founding member of the Corvette Miniature-Car Club.
On April 4, 1986, he married Marilyn Peoples Martin. During their 28 years of marriage they traveled the world, enjoyed entertaining with friends, and playing golf. They took great joy in spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Al is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lynford Stein, Neal Stein, Gary A. Stein, and Elwood Groff, and sister, Phyliss (Stein) Baker.
He is survived by his wife; two brothers, Cecil Stein of Schofield and Richard J. Stein of Nevada City, CA; two daughters, Mary Lou McCarten (her children, Christa McCarten, Kelley Kolpitcke, Karen Zanon, and Patrick McCarten), and Sandra Leith (her children, Beth Leith, and Katie Leith), both of Wausau, WI, and his step-son, Russell Martin (his children, Blair Martin and Tyson Martin) of Jacksonville, FL; seven great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Services for Al will be held Friday, August 22, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. Chaplain Paul Been will officiate.
The family would like to express tremendous gratitude to the Juan Herrera family; true family friends. Additional thanks to the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital, as well as Suzi, a nurse from Home Care, for their loving support.
