Longtime Hotchkiss resident, Gladys Ruth Penland, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Colorow Care Center in Olathe, Colorado. She was 96.
A memorial service honoring Gladys’ life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 23, 2014, at the Hotchkiss Community United Methodist Church with Pastor John Hiestand presiding. Gladys Ruth Bice was born to Elmer R. and Alma Pearl (Adams) Bice on February 5, 1918, in Codell, Kansas. She spent her childhood and attended schools in Plainville, Kansas, and Hotchkiss, Colorado.
She married Chester Penland on January 28, 1947. She was previously married to Orville Hrabe and Homer Lewis, both deceased.
Gladys owned and operated the Valley Yarn Shop in Hotchkiss for many years. This was a creative outlet for her many interests of knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing, ceramics and many other crafts. Gladys was a devoted wife and beloved mother and grandmother.
She was a member of the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge Emblem Club and the Hotchkiss Community United Methodist Church.
Gladys is survived by three daughters, Karolyn (Verlin) Kercher of Colorado Springs, CO; Linda (Archie) Linman of Klamath Falls, OR; Kathy (Mike) Shoemaker of Hotchkiss, CO; one son, Ellis (Linda)Penland of Arvada, CO; a daughter-in-law, Sue Hrabe of Sunol, CA;one brother, Raymond (Anna) Bice of LaPine, OR, and four sisters, Lola (Cliff) Ansiel of Oklahoma; Jean Dunn of Rockaway, OR; Patti (Nelson) Brooks, of Otis, OR, and Peggy Nickich of Mill City, OR.
Gladys is further survived by 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chester; three sons, Kenneth Hrabe, Gerald Hrabe, and Robert Larry Hrabe; two sisters, Doris Todd and Bonita Rothermel; four brothers, Hollis Bice, Dean Bice, Randall Bice and Neil Bice; and three grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Gladys’ name to the Food Bank at the Hotchkiss Community United Methodist Church, PO Box 576, Hotchkiss, CO 81419.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
