Terry W. Snider
August 16, 1946 - August 24, 2014
Terry W. Snider, of North Truro, and Eastham, MA passed away on August 24, 2014, at the Chelsea Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea, Massachusetts.
Born August 16, 1946, to Air Force Lieutenant Ernest J. Snider and his wife Rilla E. Holder Snider in Independence, Missouri, Terry grew up as an original member of the Baby Boomers generation, moving to Japan with his family during post war reconstruction, and graduating from Yamato High School, Japan, in 1964. Drafted by the United States Army to serve in Viet Nam in 1967, Terry completed his tour of duty there and was honorably discharged in 1969. Terry received his B.S. from the University of Colorado in Denver, and his Masters degree in Agronomy from Colorado State University at Fort Collins.
Terry worked as a Soil Scientist for the Soil Conservation Service before acting as an independent consultant. In this capacity he mapped soils in Virginia, Colorado, North Dakota, Delaware, and Massachusetts.
In 1991 he spent a year working for the US AID mapping soils in Egypt’s Nile Delta while training the Egyptian soil service work force to complete the work after his departure. His work in Egypt was the high point of his career especially since he was able to have his family accompany him for the year abroad that he spent there.
Terry was diagnosed with a debilitating neurological condition in 1992, ataxia of the cerebellum, which resulted in a progressive loss of his balance, coordination, speech, and swallowing. He spent his final years in the Chelsea Soldiers’ Home where he was cared for in the Quigley Long Term Care Unit. He struggled to live for the love of his family. He wishes to be remembered as a loving, devoted father, the most prized role of his life.
He leaves his wife, Mary Hutchings of North Truro and Eastham, Massachusetts; son, Jake, of Eastham, MA; daughter, Casey Kalina, and her husband, Tyler, of Portland, OR; his brother, Donald J. Snider, and his wife Martha, of Watkinsville, GA; a sister, Wendy Scratch, of Arvada, CO, and a number of nieces and nephews. Terry was predeceased by his brother, Randy, of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Donations in Terry’s memory can be made to the National Ataxia Foundation www.naf.org.
