Dr. James R. Dunn, 89, Grand Junction, died Oct. 13, 2014, at the Grand Junction Veterans Affairs Hospital.
Mr. Dunn was a medical doctor.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Grand Junction.
Survivors include his wife, Mary “Lou”; one son, Ed Helmick of
Spanish Fork, Utah; two daughters, Janette McKinny of Longmont and Julie Thompson of Westminster; one sister, Sally Phegley of Cortez; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

James Dunn
November 8, 1924 - October 13, 2014
On November 8, 1924, James Russell Dunn was born to Russell M. Dunn and Lois Risby Dunn in Pea Green, Colorado, near Olathe. He was joined by a sister, Sally. The family moved to a ranch near Mosca, Colorado in 1924. James attended the local grade school and graduated from high school in 1942. He joined the U. S. Army and served during World War II from August 11, 1943, to August 14, 1946. Jim was awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in action and two Purple Hearts while serving his country.
He married Mary Louise Engeberg on May 28, 1945. Jim attended Pacific Union College in Angwin, California, and graduated in 1950, with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Chemistry and minoring in Biology. He graduated from Loma Linda University in 1955 with a degree of Doctor of Medicine. In addition to his formal studies, he was gifted with two daughters, Janette and Julie. Jim interned at Porter Memorial Hospital in Denver and the family moved to Grand Junction in 1956, where Jim practiced as a General Practioner for 40 years. He was a member of the American Medical Society and the Mesa County Medical Society. He held licenses to practice medicine in the states of Colorado and New Mexico. He was an instrument rated private pilot and flew to the La Vida Mission Clinic on a Navajo Reservation in northern New Mexico twice each month for many years. He was a director of the Grand Junction Youth Pathfinder Club and a member and president of the Orchard Mesa Lions Club. After his retirement in 1996, he and “Lou” volunteered with the Maranatha organization and helped build churches and schools in the United States and South America.
He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church serving in many capacities.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Lou; daughters, Janette and Julie and son-in-law, Mike; granddaughters, Jennifer (James), Jacqueline, Kate, and Jana; great-grandson, Joey; sister, Sally, and dear friends, Ed and Janice Helmick.
A memorial service will be held October 17, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Grand Junction, Colorado, followed by Military Honors at the Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the La Veta Mission in New Mexico.
