Paul Burnett Allen
February 11, 1923 - October 13, 2014
Paul Burnett “Babe” Allen died at Valley Manor Nursing Home in Montrose on October 13, 2014. He was 91.
He was born February 11, 1923, to Rosswell Allen and Beulah Almira (Baker) Allen at Hotchkiss, Colorado. He was the third of three brothers, having two older, Ross Dean Allen and Gifford Henry Allen. He spent his whole life at Hotchkiss.
A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Hotchkiss Elks Lodge. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss, Colorado.
Paul grew up on Allen Mesa, a part of Rogers Mesa, west of Hotchkiss and attended the Lazear School through the eigth grade and then attended Hotchkiss High School.
On December 28, 1949, Paul married Erma Jean DaLee of Clifton, Colorado. Paul and Erma Jean ranched and raised sheep and eventually passed their business down to their children.
Paul was preceded in death by Erma Jean, his wife of 64 years, his parents, and both brothers. He is survived by three sons, Ross (Beth); Larry (Janet), and Jim (Pamela). They had nine grandchildren, Daniel, John, Greg, David, Becky, Ryan, Nolan, Joshua and Kevin. To date they have six great-grandchildren, Lane, Cresayde, Alyssa, Logan, Ivy and Joshua Jr.
Paul and Erma Jean enjoyed traveling and helping the boys with the sheep. Paul liked to venture with his brothers in uranium prospecting in Utah, coal mining at the Blue Ribbon Mine in Hubbard Creek, developing natural gas, making a toy chicken and making a tool for pulling steel posts. Paul enjoyed the summers in the hills, the sheep, riding horses, moving cattle and hunting.
In lieu of flowers, a program has been set up at the Elks Lodge to give an Agriculture Scholarship to a deserving senior at a North Fork High School in the Spring in the name of Paul “Babe” Allen. He had talked about contributing to something like that for a long time. Please send any memorial contributions to Hotchkiss Elks, In Memory of Paul Allen, P.O. Box 96, Hotchkiss, CO 81419.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
