Donald Albert GATES.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in Eagle August 12 for Donald Albert GATES, who was killed in a machinery accident on the Circle Bar Ranch 25 miles north of Meeker August 8.
Don was born at Burns, Colo., August 24, 1926. He spent his early life near Burns where his parents owned the Dome Ranch near the ranch homesteaded by his great-grandfather, James (Jim) Gates. He completed elementary school at Burns and attended high school in Grand Valley and Gypsum. He entered the Army in April 1945 and was assigned to the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations with the 120th Quartermaster Corp. He attained the rating of Tech. Sergeant at the time of his discharge in December 1946.
On December 3, 1950 he and Jean HORN were married and for some time he and Jean were associated with her father, Leonard HORN, Don managing the Lloyd-Jones portion of the ranch properties. Don then spent five years with Climax Molybdenum Co., later taking the position as manager of the Ingle Land & Cattle Co., owned by Bob BURGHART at Colorado Springs.
The first of 1966 he was employed to manage the Circle Bar Ranch with headquarters 25 miles north of Meeker in Axial Basin and owned by Phil JENSEN of Meeker. Don managed these extensive livestock and hay operations until the time of his untimely death.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; a daughter, Pamela and a son, Dean; his father, Jim of Albuquerque, N. Mex.; his mother, Mrs. Tillie PIERSON of Denver; a brother, Walter of Minturn; two sisters, Mrs. Nona GREEN of Denver; and Mrs. Lola CAMPBELL, Imperial Beach Calif. and several uncles, aunts, cousins, uncle, aunts, nieces, and nephews.
Pall bearers were Dale YOUNG, Walter WHEELER, Keith KIRBY, Bill HILL, Jim WILSON and Joe CARTER>
