Death of a good citizen.
Bert GATES of Burns succumbs after long battle with disease--Funeral held at Gypsum Thursday.
Bert GATES, one of the pioneers of the Burns district, passed away at his ranch home on Derby mesa near Burns Wednesday morning, August 31, following a lingering illness of many years. Creeping paralysis, which had rendered him practically helpless for the past two years, being the direct cause of his death. Mr. GATES was about fifty-seven years of age at the time of his death.
Bert GATES, who had lived and ranched in the Burns district for about thirty years, and raised his family there, was everything that a neighbor should be, a leader in every progressive enterprise in the community, and a man of sterling worth.
Mr. GATES leaves to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father, his widow Nona; nine sons and daughters, Mrs. Glen CHRISMAN, Ruth, James, Frank, Albert, Lemley, Bertha, Marie, and Edith; and brother, Clark GATES, all residing in the Burns district.
Funeral services were held from the Lutheran Church in Gypsum at 2:00 p.m. Thursday. Mayor H. L. VAN HORN had charge of the services as director, and Rev. R. R. FROBENIUS delivered the funeral sermon. A choir rendered three special numbers during the funeral services--"Lead Kindly Light," "Sometime We'll Understand," and "God Will Take Care of You." Interment was in Cedar Hill cemetery in Gypsum.
