Harold Edward Fulton, 88, died Nov. 14, 2001, at his home in Oak Creek.
He was born Sept. 18, 1913, in Oak Creek and lived there most of his life. His grandfather, Herod Fulton, came from Missouri to homestead in Routt County.
Jan. 8, 1941, Harold left Oak Creek to serve in the US Army. As a Staff Sergeant of the 67th Armored Regiment, he completed his service in Berlin on June 9, 1945. He had driven and commanded medium tanks in Tunisia, Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Normandy, northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge and the Central Europe Campaigns. He received the Silver Star Medal.
He returned to Oak Creek and worked for the Moffat Coal Company underground and then as a mechanic. When the mine shut down, he worked as a welder on a Texas oil rig for several years. Missing Oak Creek, he stated, "I'm going home and get a drink of water." He then worked for the Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Company as a mechanic at the Edna Mine for 30 years, retiring at the at the age of 70. He had received a plaque for 25 years of service without a lost time accident.
In Harold's spare time he enjoyed gunsmithing, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his first cousins, Elizabeth Fulton Wright of McPherson, Kan., Mary Fahey Dolan of Denver; two cousins, Marilyn Mansfield of Winnetka, Calif. and Roland Mansfield of Alamogordo, N.M., other relatives and his many friends.
