Joseph H. Gumber’s journey of
life began on July 22, 1924, in
Canton, Ohio, the child of Hungarian
immigrant parents, growing
up in Lakewood, Ohio. Joe served
in the Navy during WWII where
he learned to fly aircraft, which led
him to his career as an airline pilot.
He married his childhood friend
and high school sweetheart, Margie Eberling. They reared three children,
Marsha, Joseph W., and Daniel. After leaving Ohio, he made California,
Arizona, and Colorado home.
In 1984, Joe and Margie retired in Gunnison, CO and Mesa, AZ to be
close to family. Joe was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman; enjoyed
playing his keyboard; enjoyed travelling, especially to Hungary; and
was always busy with a hobby, such as woodworking, mosaics, and
tinkering. He valued his social life with friends and family and delighted
in telling stories.
Survivors include brother, Tom (Cheryl); sons, Joseph W. (Veta) and
Daniel; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Joe ended his life’s journey on October 25, 2014, at St. Mary’s Hospital
in Grand Junction. A Funeral Mass with Military Honors will be
held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on November 12th at 10:30 a.m. in
Gunnison, Colorado.
