Samuel L. Ewing was born to
Mary Esther and James Merle
Ewing in Hart, MI. In high
school he excelled in sports. He
enlisted in the US Navy in 1942,
and served in the Pacific Theater
during WWII. He was honorably
discharged in 1946. While in the
Navy, he met Martha Lisowski at
Chicago’s USO. They were married
in September, 1946, and moved to Ridgway in 1949. Sam worked
for local ranchers, the Ouray County Road Department, and then Idarado
Mining Company for 20 years.
He enjoyed gardening, his family, his neighbors, and animals. He was
a lifetime member of the Ouray County VFW. As a Christian who lived
his faith, he served as treasurer of Ridgway Community Church and
most recently attended Colona Church.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 55 years, Martha, and
four sisters.
He is survived by daughters, Nancy (Fred) Fahnestock, and Susan
(Donald) Ball, both of Grand Junction; sons, Sam Jr. (Jacquie),
Ridgway, and Tim (Cinda), Olathe. Also surviving are three grandsons,
Russell (Shannon) Fahnestock, Littleton; Brian (Annie) Fahnestock,
Denver, and David Caddy, Cheyenne, WY. He has two great-granddaughters
and another on the way; two step-granddaughters, Connie
(Dave) Ash, and Candi (Scott) Peak, and four step-great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include two brothers, a sister, and brother-in-law.
Sam is fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, and Sheila
Hickox, who was among his caregivers in recent years.
