Steamboat Pilot - January 6, 2002

George Phillip Sauer, 90, of Longmont, died Jan. 1, 2002, at Hospice of Boulder County in Louisville.

He was born Aug. 17, 1911, in Hugo to George Henry and Elizabeth Margaret (Schroeder) Sauer. He graduated from Hugo High School in 1929 and attended college at the Colorado State College of Education, now the University of Northern Colorado, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1943. He went on to attend the University of Denver, graduating with a master’s degree in 1947. On June 16, 1937, he married Opal Williams in Benkelman, Neb.

George was a schoolteacher who taught in several rural schools from 1930 to 1934, then spent a year teaching in Harrison, Neb., taught three years in Bartley, Neb., from 1935 to 1938; three years in Arrila from 1938 to 1941; and one year in Eads from 1942 to 1943 before finding his niche in Steamboat Springs, where he stayed for 33 years. While in Steamboat he spent one year as a teacher, five years as a principal and finished his career with 27 years as the superintendent, retiring in 1976 with 46 years of service with public education behind him. George was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Colorado Association of School Executives, the PERA Board, the Colorado Education Association, School Master, American Association of Administration and a life member of National Education Association.

While living in Steamboat Springs, he had an educational research building named after him in honor of his years of educational service to the community. He was also a member of the Lions Club in Steamboat Springs.

He is survived by a son, John Sauer and wife Margilee of Lyons; a daughter, Sister Sarah Manchester of Alliance, Neb.; two brothers, Norbert Bertrand Sauer and wife Evelyn of Longmont and David Harold Sauer and wife Wylda of Aurora; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1999 and his son Norbert Paul Sauer in 1993.

Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 7, 2002, at Howe Mortuary Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 8 at St. John The Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Morrow as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to either Hospice of Boulder County or the George P. Sauer Resource Center in Steamboat Springs in care of Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont, 80501.
