Donald Keith Andrews

Donald Keith Andrews of Nucla, Colorado died January 13, 2015, at home. He was born May 19, 1924, to Keith McGregor Andrews and Grace Nelson in Gunnison, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Sydney, and a sister, Wilda Cloyd.
He married his high school sweetheart, Betty Irene Hoyt, October 22, 1948. They had three children, Donald M. Andrews of Nucla; David (Terri) Andrews of Norwood, and Bonnie (John) Young of Brigham City, Utah; ten grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Don was raised up Ohio Creek and on the Powderhorn where
he loved to hunt and fish. He graduated from Gunnison High
School in1942. He served in WWII, enlisting in the Army Air
Corp in 1942. He entered pilots school in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and he was commissioned a Lt. at 19 years of age. He was a pilot in the South Pacific Theatre in the the 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Group.
After WWII he went to work as a pilot for Rigg Aviation in
Grand Junction, Colorado. He began mining with his father on
the Colorado Plateau in 1949, and later with his sons until 1984.
He loved airplanes and to fly. He taught many people how to
fly including his children. He flew emergency medical flights as
well as commercially in the area. He continued to fly for enjoyment in later years. He retired in 1984, living in Nucla until his death.
Don loved and enjoyed his grandchildren and spent many
hours with them.
He was a great patriot and loved his country, the Nucla area
and its people. He never liked to attend funerals and at his request there will not be one.
Graveside services will be held Monday, January 19, 2015, at
1:00p.m. at the Gunnison Cemetery, Gunnison, Colorado.
