Grand Junction, Colorado resident,
Mildred L. Childers passed
away on Sunday, November 16,
2014, at Mantey Heights Rehab
and Care Center in Grand Junction,
Colorado. She was 89 years
of age.
Graveside funeral services will
be held to honor Mildred’s life at
1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 22,
2014, at Orchard Mesa Cemetery in Grand Junction with James Gall
officiating. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at
Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction.
Mildred Lucy Skees was born on May 18, 1925, to Martin Lorraine
and Hattie Sadalia (Ross) Skees in Nucla, Colorado. She spent her
childhood in Nucla and graduated from Nucla High School with the
Class of 1943.
On November 25, 1945, Mildred married Stanley C. Swain in Nucla.
To this union, two sons were born. Stanley preceded her in death on
October 2, 1962, in Grand Junction. Mildred moved to Grand Junction
in 1966. Prior to moving to Grand Junction, she lived in Denver, Paradox
and Cimarron, Colorado.
On May 9, 1975, Mildred married Charles E. Childers in Grand Junction.
Mildred was a Baptist and a former member of Bethney Chapter
O.E.S. She enjoyed family dinners and get togethers, fishing, camping,
gambling and reading. She was an avid Denver Bronco fan. She also
enjoyed watching hummingbirds and gardening, especially her rose
garden. At one time Mildred had over 50 rose bushes that she tenderly
cared for. Mildred was a rancher, waitress for Gay Johnson’s for 11
years, and co-owner of Basin Western Trucking in Grand Junction prior
to her retirement.
Mildred is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Charles
“Chuck” of Grand Junction; three sons, Joseph S. Swain and spouse,
Lucy of Grand Junction; Chalmer S. Swain and spouse, Marge of Delta,
Colorado; and Kevin Childers and spouse, Jeanie of Denver, Colorado;
a brother, Jack Skees and spouse, Leora of Farmington, New Mexico;
nine grandchildren, JoLynn (Damian) Swain Baughman of Fruita,
Colorado; Daniel (Stephanie) Swain of Salt Lake City Utah; Stephen
C. Swain of Littleton, Colorado; Kristine (Frank) Davis of San Angelo,
Texas; Matthew Swain of Montrose, Colorado; Amber L. Swain of
Delta, Colorado; Richard (Kim) Blevins of Browns Park, Colorado;
Sherri (Tony) Suazo of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Tom Blevins
of Denver, Colorado; 19 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Stanley
Swain; brothers, Bill and Bob Skees, and sisters, Irene Zunich and
Hazel Baker.
The family suggests memorial contributions to be made in Mildred’s
memory to HopeWest Hospice, P. O. Box 24, Delta, Colorado 81416.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service
and Crematory.
