Marjorie F. Smith
August 10, 1929 - January 16, 2015
Marjorie F. Smith, a long time resident of Fruita, died Friday January 16, 2015, at Hope West Care Center with her family at her side. She was 85.
Marge was born in Mesa, Colorado on August 10, 1929, to Rondall and Aina Woodring. She graduated from Collbran Union High School. While attending business school in Denver, she met the love of her life, Howard B. Smith. They married on August 21, 1948, after a whirl-wind courtship of three weeks. Marge and Howard celebrated 44 years together before he passed in 1992.
They made their home and raised their three children, Ron,
Sharla and Les, in Fruita. Marge was a very active member of
the community, from seeing her children through school and
their various activities to serving as a volunteer for the Fruita
Thrift Shop for 20 years. She was quick to laugh and enjoyed a wide circle of good friends. She was an avid reader and gardener, and her roses always thrived.
Marge had a big, loving heart, and never hesitated to open her home to anyone who needed a hot meal or place to stay. As a result, the Smith family added several "adopted" children and grandchildren over the years. Marge truly found joy in her grandchildren and great-grand children, delighting in their accomplishments both big and small. Connections between family and friends were very important to her. She was proud to be part of the homestead history of Western Colorado. Her stories have created a lasting link between past and present generations.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Karen Smith of Hotchkiss; daughter and son-in-law, Sharla and Joe Carpenter of Rifle; son, Les Smith of Grand Junction, 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and a beloved circle of extended family and friends.
Marge is reunited with her husband and favorite cowboy, Howard B. Smith. She was preceeded in death by her brother, Martin Woodring.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 24th at Canyon West Worship Center, 456 Kokopelli Blvd Unit G, in Fruita, with internment at the Mesa Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to HopeWest Hospice.
