Patricia Norman, 92, passed away Aug. 6.
Patricia was born in New Orleans to William A. and Phereby R. Eagan. She attended school in New Orleans. In 1943, she joined the Women’s Auxiliary of the United States Marine Corps.
While in the service, she met fellow Marine Kenneth Darrel Norman. They were married in New Orleans on April 30, 1946. They made their first home in Imperial, Nebraska, and they later moved to Cope, where Kenneth was a wheat farmer. While helping her husband farm and raising her small children, Patricia ran a grocery store and creamery, and she also worked as the secretary for the superintendent of schools.
In 1960, the family moved to Eagle, where they operated a cattle ranch on Brush Creek.
In 1965, she began her career with the United States Post Office by becoming a clerk. She later was appointed postmaster, a position she held until her retirement in 1984.
After retirement, she fulfilled her life-long goal of attending college and graduated with an AA degree. After graduation she continued to take classes. Through the art facilities at Colorado Mountain College she became an accomplished ceramic artist and produced many beautiful, one of a kind ceramic pieces with her PEN signature.
She was very active in the local community, serving on the Eagle Cemetery Board, Friends of the Library Board, participating in the local Business and Professional Women’s group, the Chamber of Commerce and many others. She also volunteered as a tutor for the Adult Literacy Program.
She was an avid gardener and especially loved flowers and the birds that came to her gardens.
Throughout her life she was politically active, participating as an election judge for many years. She wrote to her elected officials whenever she felt they needed guidance and wrote a sometimes political column for the national magazine Capper’s Weekly.
Patsy was a beautiful woman — intelligent, well-read, well-educated, interested, interesting, hard-working and courageous. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken, and by her son William Andrew (Bill) Norman. She is survived by her son Kevin, of Shenzhen, China; daughter Shirley Zupancic (Raymond), of Eagle; daughter Lucille Post (Brad), of Eagle; daughter-in-law Cathy Norman, of Iron Mountain, Michigan; and daughter Charlotte Norman (Jack Tyler) of Penrose; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A gathering to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sept. 12 at her home, 3220 Brush Creek Road, Eagle.
