Demecio Fresquez, 75, of Gypsum, formerly of Red Cliff, passed away on Friday, Aug. 28.
He was born in Peñasco, N.M., on July 1, 1940, to Matias and Manuela (Maestas) Fresquez. He married Barbara Jean (Martinez) Fresquez on May 6, 1960, in Red Cliff; they were married for 55 years. He worked at the Gilman and Climax mines, and later opened a variety store in Red Cliff for 20 years then later opened Señor Demecio’s Tortilla Factory for 15 years. He retired from the Eagle County School District in 2005. Fresquez served on the Red Cliff Town Council and volunteer fire department for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, skiing and cooking.
Fresquez is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Fresquez, of Gypsum; son, Demecio Dean Fresquez, of Keystone; daughter, Louella (Ray) Romero, of Red Cliff; daughter, Kathy Lopez, of Gypsum; grandsons, Steven (Kim) Fresquez and John Paul (Sherice) Lopez; granddaughters, Dominica (Jeremy) Medina, Marissa (Daniel) Romero and Trisha (Brandon) Lopez; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Ray; and sisters, Rose and Mary.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Ray Ray Romero; brother, Donald Fresquez; and sisters, Cora Ulliberri and Dorothy Valencia.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3, at St. Patrick Parish, Minturn, from 6 to 7 p.m. with a rosary service beginning at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Sept. 4, at St. Patrick Parish at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Red Cliff with a reception to follow at the Red Cliff Community Building.
