George was born the son of Harold and Mary Wixson on October 18, 1943, in Hayden, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Hayden, attending public school and working for several Routt County ranches. After graduating from Hayden High School, George attended a barbering school in Denver. Following school he started a barbershop in Rawlins, Wyoming. He enjoyed this career venture for over 10 years before starting a career as a guard at the state penitentiary. While living in Rawlins, WY George married and fathered three children. Following his time with the state, George moved back to Hayden and began what would be his last career with Twentymile Coal Company (purchased by Peabody Energy in 2004) as a security guard, and then later, as a beltline mechanic. George retired with 20 years of service to the mine. Following retirement, George worked as a vender to Twentymile Coal Company under George’s Sharpening Service.
On July 1, 1980, George married the love of his life, Jeannie Marie Kagie in Hayden, Colorado. To this union, two children were born, Heather and Joel. The couple raised their family in Hayden, and was always involved in school and community organizations. After their children graduated and began their own careers and families, George and Jeannie spent more time traveling and pursuing their hobbies, such as gardening and watching wildlife at their cabin. George particularly enjoyed storytelling, wood carving, photography, learning new things, and bird and wildlife watching. The couple celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary earlier this month.
George is survived by his wife, Jeannie of Hayden; his mother, Mary Wixson of Hayden; three sons: Scott Wixson of Rawlins, WY, Nelson Wixson of Cary, NC, and Joel Wixson of Gainesville, FL; two daughters, Gina O’Gorman of Wake Forest, NC and Heather McDowell of Saratoga Springs, NY; and one brother, James Wixson of Glasgow, MT. George is further survived by eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
