Lloyd Gerald Lockhart of Steamboat Springs, CO died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Steamboat Springs, CO on Tuesday, October 13th, 2015. He was 94.
Lloyd was born August 12, 1921 in Steamboat Springs to Ray and Ruth Lockhart – one of “Dr. Willet's babies”. The family moved to Casper, Wyoming when Lloyd was three years of age. His father died when he was five years old. At age 11 his mother passed away. As an orphan, Lloyd was sent with his two brothers to live with an uncle, Robert Etzler on the Etzler ranch in Steamboat Springs. This wasn't a very satisfactory situation and at age 14 he moved to town and was “on his own.” Lloyd worked cooking and washing dishes in restaurants, cleaning various establishments and shoveling snow. He was a good student and also excelled in sports. In high school he met his life-long sweetheart, Annabeth Light, whom he married in 1941 – eight days before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Of course Uncle Sam wanted him; he was drafted into the U. S. Army and sent to Germany to serve with the Third Army. Lloyd served under General Patton as a radio corpsman in the field artillery during WWII; and, after the war, he served in the occupation forces for nearly a year in Germany. Upon his return to the United States Lloyd was employed by Challenger Airlines (later to become Frontier) while attending the University of Colorado in Denver where he majored in electrical engineering. In 1953 Lloyd, Annabeth, and their sons Tyrone and Delano moved back to their home town of Steamboat Springs to work with Lloyd’s father-in-law Clarence Light at F. M. Light & Sons – the well-known western store. After a few years, Lloyd left the store and purchased the Texaco bulk dealership. In 1963 he and Annabeth purchased F.M. Light & Sons and were involved with the store for many decades. Lloyd entered into the spirit of Steamboat Springs and served many years in all activities related to his chosen place to live. Lloyd served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Winter Sports Club, Chairman of the 50th Winter Carnival, an active member of the Kiwanis Club, a founding member of the Steamboat Rotary Club, and as a commander of the American Legion, along with many other community service positions. Lloyd was a thoughtful, caring and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Lloyd always put his family first.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 74 years, two sons, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren: son Tyrone and his wife Betty and their two children, Brandon Lockhart and Lindsay Dillenbeck and her husband, Chris Dillenbeck; son Delano and his wife Nina of Steamboat Springs and their children, Daniel Lockhart and his wife Jessica Lockhart and their children Bruce, Elena and Emma of Tucson, AZ; Bethany Roise and her husband Andrew Roise and their children Jeremiah, Simonne, Ethan and Xander of Salt Lake City, Utah; Susanna LaRosa and her husband, Dustin LaRosa of Denver; Dawson Lockhart and James Lockhart of Denver, and Sarah Lockhart and Jonathan Lockhart of Steamboat Springs. Lloyd is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Lloyd's two brothers, Clyde Lockhart and Jack Lockhart and his great-grandchild Andrew Roise preceded him in death.
A reception honoring Lloyd Lockhart will take place this Sunday, October 25th from 3:00-5:30pm at the Haymaker Patio Grill. All are welcome. Internment took place at the Steamboat Springs cemetery on Friday, October 16th.
