Lewis Johnson was born in
Antlers, Oklahoma to Esther
and William Arthur Johnson,
fourth of eight children. After
serving in the US Navy,
during World War II, Lewis
met his soul mate, Gleeanna
Carnahan, on a blind date;
they were married shortly
after in Grand Junction on February 15, 1953. Lewis and
Gleeanna were blessed with six children who they raised in
Palisade. Lewis worked as a machinist and an operating
engineer as he lived in various locations in Colorado. After
working for Elam Construction for 25 years Lewis and
Gleeanna retired and moved to Collbran to build their retirement
home and fulfill their passion for ranching. In 2012, health
issues brought Lewis and Gleeanna back to Palisade where they
would be close to family.
Gleeanna’s health deteriorated, due to dementia, placing her in
the Palisade Living Center a block away from their new home.
Lewis’ love and devotion did not waiver; he would visit her
every day until his health hindered his ability to continue. His
love for her stayed strong until his passing on St. Patrick’s Day,
2015, at home surrounded by loving family. Lewis is now
patiently waiting for the love of his life to join him in a place
without pain.
Lewis was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Gina
Ruth, and son-in-law, Richard Gorman. He is survived by his
wife, Gleeanna; children Anna Marie Gorman of Grand
Junction, Luann Levine (Randy Greenwood) of Arvada,
SueEllen (Karl Manley) of Grand Junction, Patrick Johnson of
Gypsum, and Galyn (John Rork) of Colorado Springs. He leaves
twelve grandchildren: Emily Kempton and Ellie Gorman;
Nicole Levine; Richmond, Maurice, and Bradley Manley;
Megan Kingsbury, Rebekah, Gina, and Stephanie Johnson;
Kelsey and Jack Rork; and four great-grandchildren. His two
surviving siblings are Bradley (North Carolina) and Murray
(Texas). Other loved ones who will miss him include Mike
Levine, Liz Johnson, Chris Kempton, Kelly Manley, Brett
Kingsbury, and many nieces and nephews.
Honoring Lewis’ request, no formal services will be held.
Instead, a celebration of life will be held when Gleeanna joins
Lewis at the gates of Heaven. Donations can be made to
HopeWest of Grand Junction.
“I love you in the morning and in the afternoon. I love you in
the evening and underneath the moon.”
