Ruth A. Greager
May 19, 1922 - July 1, 2015
Long time Fruita resident, Ruth Greager, passed away on July 1, 2015, at HopeWest Hospice Care Center, she was 93 years old.
Ruth was born May 19, 1922, in Disappointment Valley and lived her entire life in Colorado. She graduated high school in Norwood. She married Paul Greager and they had three boys, Glen, Vernon and Chuck. After becoming a widow twice, in 1958 Ruth took her young, onery boys to the lower valley. There she worked long, hard hours as a cook, waitress and bartender to provide for her boys.
Ruth was well known in the valley for owning Ruth’s Tavern
for many years in Fruita (now Fiesta Guadalajara). She was
famous for her Ruth’s chili and homemade french fries. Ruth
was a giver not only of herself, but to the community in
donations for many causes and sponsoring softball teams for
many years. Ruth was like a second mom to all her son’s
friends. She also operated the Fruita Creamery for many years before owning her own business.
She truly one of the most generous people who ever lived. One Fruita resident made the statement that Ruth had more money loaned out than the Fruita State Bank! Ruth will be remembered also by her fishing abilities, always catching the most fish! She loved the Broncos and proudly wore her jacket everywhere.
Ruth was the queen of Gin Rummy, teaching her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to play. Of course
most of the time she won.
She was preceded in death by James Charles Souther and Elsie Greenlee (her parents); Paul Greager, Vern Reindel, Bill
O’Brien, Chuck Greager, and Glen Greager. Survivers include
her son, Vernon Greager (Marty); 13 grandchildren, Debbie,
Corrine, Paul, Dewey, John, Kimberly, Michelle, Mark, Karah,
LaChelle, Chanda, Charlie, and Cade; 32 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Her cherished memory will live in the hearts of many family and friends.
Services with be held at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary on July
10th at 10:00 a.m. Immediate procession to New Elmwood
Cemetery in Fruita.
Memorial contributions may be made in Ruth’s honor to
HopeWest Hospice Center.
