Robert H. Fenner
April 20, 1946 - July 6, 2015
Robert H. Fenner, 69, of Grand Junction, Colorado, and a former resident of Sherrill, NY, died at home on Monday, July 6, 2015.
He was born in Oneida on April 20, 1946, the son of Haskell and Rachael (Peg) Fenner. He lived in Kenwood for many years and moved to Hamilton in 1963. He attended VVS Schools and graduated from Hamilton Central School.
He was also a graduate of SUNY Morrisville, majoring in Journalism.
On April 24, 1968, he married the former Marion Smith of
Barnum, Minnesota, at the RAF Woodbridge Chapel in England.
Rob had been employed as a sales representative by the
Pettibone Corporation, the Syracuse Supply Company, and had been the Branch Manager for the General Battery Corporation in East Syracuse. He had also been a car salesman for several area dealerships and was a school bus driver for VVS for five years.
He was active in Sherrill youth sports and served as chief umpire of the Sherrill Little League for five years. He was also active in the VVS Pop Warner program.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served 51 months on active
duty with the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Sherrill Post #230, American Legion, and had served two terms as Adjutant and terms as Sgt-at-Arms and Finance Officer. He also served one term as Secretary of the Post 230 Memorial Building Corp.
He was an active and honorary member of the Post’s Honor
Guard.
He was a life member of Grand Junction Post #1247, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a life member of Coonley-Nojaim Chapter 30, Disabled Veterans in Syracuse.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 595
in Grand Junction, the National Rifle Association, the Orchard
Mesa Gun Club in Grand Junction, and was a former member of the Durhamville Veterans Club, the Oneida Owls Club, and the Oneida Rifle Club.
An avid golfer, he was a former member of the Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction and a former member of Pleasant Knolls Golf Course "Peter’s Patch" in Verona, NY, where he played in several golf leagues including the Owl’s League and the Wednesday morning Men’s League. He carded 11 eagles and two holes-in-one during his golfing days.
He had worked as a volunteer starter/ranger at both the
Redlands Mesa and Adobe Creek Golf Courses in Grand Junction and played in the Adobe Creek Senior League.
Before moving to Colorado, he spent much of his leisure time
at the family camp on South Lake in the Adirondacks.
Bob loved all dogs, but was especially fond of black and golden labs. He had an uncanny knack of making friends with all breeds of dogs, many of which would wait for him on his walking routes in hopes of getting a small treat. He often said that dogs have more character than many people he’d met in his life.
He also had a passion for trains and trolley cars. He and his
wife took a trip to Toronto, Canada, just to ride the street car system from the beginning to the end of the line. He was proud that his son became an engineer for the BNSF railroad.
He is survived by his wife, Marion, and his son, Mark, both of
Grand Junction; sister, Barbara Kershaw of Hamilton, NY;
brother, Richard, also of Hamilton, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by one cousin, John Fenner, of Appleton, ME.
He was predeceased by a brother, Bruce, in 1983.
Burial will be in the Western Colorado Veterans Memorial
Cemetery. Any memorial donations in his name may be sent to Roice-Hurst Humane Society, 362 28 Road, Grand Junction, CO 81501.
