Steamboat Today - November 11, 2015

Jonathan McCabe Heuberger, 71, passed away from Alzheimer’s on Nov. 8, 2015 in the loving embrace of his family at his home in Steamboat Springs, CO. He remained cheerful and upbeat for the duration of his long illness, much to the delight of his family.
Jonathan was born, raised and educated in Newark, Delaware (or Dela-where, as he fondly put it). He was a proud supporter of his alma mater, the University of Delaware where he received his MBA, until they abolished the wresting program and took down his plaque, much to his dismay.
He met the love of his life, Barbara Jean Dunham, in 1967 and shortly there after announced to her and her family that they were getting married. As a couple, they developed a love of skiing and outdoor fun. They spent so much time having fun that they almost forgot to have kids. Fortunately, they came to their senses and had two daughters, Keri and Gretchen, who quickly become the second and third loves of his life. Over the years he reluctantly, but wisely and gracefully, acquiesced to a family life dominated by three females.
After graduation and a stint in the Army, he began a job with DuPont where he happily remained for 40 years. His job with DuPont took his family on a three year adventure in Germany, providing for some unforgettable family laughs and misadventures. Seldom wrong, but never in doubt, he landed in the pharmaceutical business, where he became a Vice President of DuPont Pharmaceuticals, retiring in 2002.
Retirement meant checking out what seemed like every single ski town before enthusiastically embracing Steamboat Springs, CO. By the time this process was complete, he could not fathom why anyone would want to live anywhere else. His Alzheimer’s diagnosis did not deter him from pursuing a totally active lifestyle, hip replacements and all. With the help of his family, friends and this wonderful community, he was able to “Ride the Rockies” in 2011 and to remain active and engaged for as long as possible.
Jonathan is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean (BJ) of 46 years; his daughter Keri Gannon, her husband Tom Gannon and grandson Tommy Gannon of San Diego; his daughter Gretchen Heuberger and her husband Duncan Purves of New York City: his sister, Gretchen Walker and brother, Peter Heuberger. All of them will miss his enthusiasm, his unsolicited pearls of wisdom and his daily rendition of the Steamboat weather report. He will be remembered tooling around in his purple Porsche in constant search of a cup of coffee to be enjoyed while reading the stock market report.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to the Northwest Colorado VNA (940 Central Park Drive Suite 101/Steamboat Springs, Colorado 80487) for the kind and compassionate care they provided or to the S.T.A.R.S (Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports) Program ( for making athletic pursuits available to all.
