Irwin was born on July 26, 1925 in Yampa, Colorado to his parents Vinton Irwin Hassig and Gertrude Elizabeth (Macfarlane) Hassig. He was their first child and was shortly followed by the births of five sisters; Aldean, Betty, Naomi, Shirley, and Jackie, all who idolized their older brother.
Irwin and his family grew up on Five Pine Mesa near Toponas, Colorado where his father made a living raising sheep.
Irwin proudly served in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theatre, landing in Luzon, Philippines, where he was stationed until the end of the war.
Irwin returned to Yampa and on March 23, 1947, married Lucy Charlene Norman. They bought a home in Yampa where they raised their six children; Cynthia, Brenda, Debra, Terry, Bobby, and Bradley.
Irwin was a logger by trade starting out in his early years with a team of horses and building his business throughout his career with unending hard work.
Irwin referred to Yampa as “God’s Country” and always called it his home. He served his community for many years on the town board and also the school board. He was a founding member of the American Legion Post in Yampa and continued his membership until his death. He provided the children of Yampa with their very first ice skating rink. Irwin had a zest for life and was always playing pranks and making people laugh. He had a great love for children, animals and old people.
Irwin is survived by this wife, Charlene, his six children, his sister Shirley, numerous grand and great-grand children, and a multitude of friends. His family and friends feel honored for having known him and are deeply saddened and heartbroken by his passing.
