Brigadier General Harry Taylor Hagaman
May 1, 1928 - September 1, 2015
Brigadier General Harry Taylor Hagaman (USMC Retired), former Director of Intelligence Headquarters Marine Corps and a longtime resident of Grand Junction, Colorado, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at the Grand
Junction Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
BGEN Hagaman was born in 1928, in Lakewood, New Jersey,
to the late Casper Lyle and Olive Fields Dickerson Hagaman. In 1956, he and Margaret Bogner were married in Denver,
Colorado. After graduating from the University of Colorado in
1961, he continued his education at George Washington
University, graduating in 1964 with a Master’s degree. BGEN
Hagaman was a member of the United Methodist Church and
was a Mason.
He was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps in
1952 and designated a Naval Aviator. He served with various
Marine fighter squadrons in Korea, Japan, North and South
Carolina, California and Hawaii and held various and diverse
assignments during his long and distinguished 32 year military
career, including flight instructor.
BGEN Hagaman advanced through the ranks and, after being
promoted to Major, attended the Air Command and Staff
College, graduating in 1964. Following several more duty
assignments, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1967
and sent to Vietnam to assume command of Marine Corps
Attack Squadron 323 and Marine Aircraft Group 14. He was
heavily engaged in combat operations there and was shot down over Khe Sanh in 1968.
Upon his return from Vietnam, BGEN Hagaman attended the
Joint Services Staff College and graduated with honors from the Naval War College. He continued his Marine Corps career
serving in various, high-level capacities and staff positions
culminating with his promotion to Brigadier General and his
assignment as Commanding Officer General of the 1 Marine
Brigade, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. He considered this
assignment at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air station on Oahu as
one of the highlights of his life.
BGEN Hagaman received many awards, decorations and
medals including the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star
Medal with Combat “V”, Air Medal with 21 Awards, and the
Purple Heart.
He retired from military service in 1982 and continued to work
as a defense contractor until he moved to Grand Junction in
1993. BGEN Hagaman was well known in the area as a “down
to earth” gentleman with a big heart who was of service to all
people. He led an endeavor to develop a cooperative effort
between area law enforcement and senior citizens called SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together), which coordinated numerous projects to combat crimes against seniors. He took great pride in helping Western Slope veterans and helped to build the Vietnam War Memorial Park in Fruita with its featured Huey helicopter, the type that saved his life when he was shot down in Vietnam. BGEN Hagaman was often invited to speak and to participate in local events and did so graciously.
He was tireless in his efforts to raise money for scholarships for veterans of all branches of the military
BGEN Hagaman had a passion for being physically fit and
mastered many of life’s joys. He was an avid skier at
Powderhorn to the age of 82. He scuba dived the Islands of
Hawaii, and played every kind of sport including basketball,
baseball and racket ball. He coached a Navy/Marine football
team while living in Naples, Italy. He enjoyed horseback riding,
hunting, camping, hiking and fishing. He also did countless
hours of volunteer work at the police substation and enjoyed
acting with the Senior Follies.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret Bogner
Hagaman of Grand Junction; son, John Taylor Hagaman of West
Hills, California; daughter, Heather Ann Hagaman of Reston,
Virginia. Other survivors include four grandchildren.
