Marian Pearl (Marshall) Sage was born the second child of Lawrence "Doc" and Eva Marshall June 24, 1923, at the Burt home in Yampa. Doc and Eva were running the 21 ranch near Burns.
Both of Marian's' grandparents homesteaded near Yampa. The Marshalls lived up the river road toward Stillwaters. The Evans homesteaded on Sunnyside near the Dome Peak of the Flat Tops. Marian was born with a dislocated hip which required her to be in body casts much of her childhood and left her with a limp the rest of her life.
Doc and Eva moved their young family to the Gibbs ranch now known as the Finger Rock ranch south of Yampa when Eva suddenly passed away. Marian, her sister, Marguerite, and their two brothers, Bill and Bummy were raised by their father until adulthood on the ranch.
Marian attended the Yampa school. To get to school, she rode horseback, went by buggy or sleigh. When she was in a casts, she stayed with family and friends in town. After leaving high school Marian made her way to California to help family. It was there she met Johnie Sage and they were married Aug. 13, 1946, in Reno, Nev. To this union, three children were born, Patricia, Shelia and Wesley. The family spent most of their life together around Riverbank and Modesto, Calif., moving back to Colorado from time to time when Johnie worked in the Timber Camps and returning to California when the children started to school.
Marian was a homemaker, mother and grandmother and devoted her life to the family, which didn't give her a lot of time away from home.
Johnie passed away Feb. 5, 1971. Marian stayed in California with her children and grandchildren.
For the past 3.5 years Marian and daughter Patty have shared the home of her sister, Marguerite of Denver and the ranch home of her niece and husband, Linda and Dusty Long on Trout Creek, near Oak Creek.She enjoyed looking out the window at the changing of the four seasons, the mountains, seeing wildlife, especially deer and Elk and the wildflowers when the columbines and wild roses were in bloom.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and two grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Sage of Oak Creek and Denver and Shelia Ford and husband Charles of Oak Dale, Calif; a son, Wesley Sage and wife Nancy of West Forks, Ark.; two brothers, Lawrence "Bill" Marshall and wife Gladys of Albuquerque, N.M. and Virgil "Bummy" Marshall and wife Clarice of Canon City; a sister, Marguerite Anderson of Denver; an aunt, Jessie Marshall of Cotati (Cohti), Calif.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was at 1 p.m. Oct. 10, 2001, at the Yampa Bible Church. Officiating was Rod Krey. Interment was at the Yampa Cemetery.
