BRAKEMAN LOSES LIFE IN EAGLE RIVER CANYON. ORVILLE FIELDS FALLS FROM BOX CAR AND BREAKS NECK WHILE WORKING HIS TRAIN. BODY TAKEN TO SALIDA FOR BURIAL THIS WEEK.
Orville FIELDS, a Denver & Rio Grande railroad brakeman on the second division, of Salida, died Tuesday of last week while being taken to Minturn from Belden switch in the Eagle river canyon, after he fell from a box car while switching cars. It is thought he slipped on an icy rod to which he was holding when he was attempting to reach the switch on the other side of the car.
He was found by Thomas V. GALLAGHER, conductor on the train, who became alarmed after Mr. FIELDS did not return to the car. Mr. GALLAGHER went to the rear of the train and found Mr. FIELDS injured. He was lying in the middle of the track. His neck was broken. He was alive when he was found but could not give an account of the accident. He died an hour later.
He appeared to have been rolled under the car, but the wheels did not pass over him. Several ribs were crushed.
A brother of the dead man came to Minturn and took the body to Salida for burial. Funeral services and burial were held in Salida Tuesday of this week.
The deceased man was 36 years old and is survived by his widow, and two children, a daughter and a son.
