Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 5 B Obituary - September 10, 2015

Smitty passed away
September 7, 2015, at LaVilla
Grande Care Center at the age
of 91.
He was born on October 10,
1923, in Carlisle, AR. He
moved to Parachute, CO when
he was 12 and was raised on
Battlement Mesa. Smitty
served in the United States
Navy in WWII. On February
23, 1953, he was severely
burned in a gasoline truck
fire. Because he wasn’t
expected to live after this
accident, he called February
23 his second birthday.
Smitty married Carolyn Sue
Walker on August 28, 1964.
Carolyn passed away in 1988.
He then married Dorothy
Churches in 1989. Dorothy
passed away in 2012.
Although Smitty was “disabled” he never looked at his life that
way. He was always busy. After he was burned he helped farm
the land that is now Spring Valley subdivision, he loved hunting
and fishing and going to auctions. One of his favorite pastimes
was taking the fun flights to Wendover, Nevada.
Smitty is survived by his daughter, Cindy Jo (Jim) Janecek of
Grand Junction; grandson, Wade Janecek (Emily) of Denver;
granddaughter, Nadine Janecek of Bellingham, WA; brother,
Louis (Marian) Smith of Reno, NV; niece, Marilyn (Frank)
Davis of Reno, NV, and several great nieces and nephews. He is
preceded in death by his father, Clyde Smith; mother, Effie
Smith, and niece, Ruth Ward-Emmil.
Smitty was a life member of VFW Post 1247.
A Life Celebration will be held Saturday, September 12th at
11:00 a.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HopeWest
Hospice.
