John Hays died Feb. 18, 2001, in Billings, Mont. He was 69 years old.

He was born Feb. 14, 1932, in Watson, Ill., to William and Carrie Hays. He was the oldest of 10 children.

He left home when he was in the eighth grade and worked many positions over the course of his life; he worked as a ranch hand in Nebraska, at a newspaper in Loveland and as a business owner in Brighton.

He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.

He attended college at Fort Hays in Hays, Kan., receiving his bachelor of science degree in business administration.

He married Lillian Glassman in 1956 and they moved to Hayden in 1973.

He worked for the Hayden School District from 1973 to 1994 as a teacher and transportation director and donated countless hours of his time announcing, keeping score and driving the students to hundreds of activities.

John enjoyed fishing and golf and being involved with the students, teachers and parents of the Hayden School District.

He is survived by two sons, Bill and wife Rose of Buckley, Wash., and Douglas and wife Carole of Salinas, Calif.; two daughters, Janet of Hot Sulphur Springs and Linda and husband Bob of Billings, Mont.; six grandsons; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 24 at Hayden High School.

Cremation has taken place and the family met for a private graveside service.
