Bill Huber, age 87, passed
away on September 17, 2015.
Bill was born on March 4,
1928 in Glenwood Springs,
Colorado. Bill was the only
child of William H. and Isobel
R. Huber. Bill attended
Glenwood Springs High
School and lettered in football
and basketball. During Bill’s
high school years he was a
champion Golden Glove boxer,
construction worker at
Camp Hale, and enjoyed hunting
and fishing on the
Flattops. Bill attended the University
of Colorado in Boulder
and graduated from the
School of Pharmacy in 1949.
During Bill’s summer breaks
from CU, he was a lifeguard
at the Glenwood Springs Pool
where he met the love of his life, Betty Rae Chase, while she
was sunbathing near the swan pond. Betty and Bill were married
on September 4, 1949. Betty preceded Bill in death on December
11, 2014.
Bill and Betty owned the Campus Drug store on North Avenue
which was established by Bill’s father in 1947. They also owned
and operated Huber Drug on Grand Avenue and Plaza Pharmacy
in the Teller Arms Shopping Center in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The Huber family sold the Campus and Plaza Drug stores
and later purchased the Grand Junction Credit Bureau with their
partner George Wheeler. Bill retired in 1985 following the sale
of the credit bureau.
Bill loved the outdoors and spending time with the family. Bill
enjoyed skiing, hiking, camping, jeeping, rock-hunting trips in
southeastern Utah (Moab and Canyonlands) and boating on
Lake Powell. Bill was a pilot and took the family on many ski
trips including a long distant flight to California for a summer vacation.
In retirement, Bill enjoyed repairing antique cuckoo clocks, restoring
antique slot machines, and golfing at the Bookcliff Country
Club (of which he was a founding member in 1958). Bill
loved many get-togethers with family and grandchildren and
sharing in good food, fun, and lots of laughter. Bill reveled in
sharing stories of his Colorado experiences of yore, had a remarkable
memory, and was an enthusiastic storyteller. Bill was
a generous person and was always willing to lend a helping
hand. Bill was a very religious man and enjoyed his worship at
St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
Bill is survived by his four sons, Gary (Shirley), Centennial,
Colorado, Mark (Darsie), Cedaredge, Colorado, Kim (Tina), Superior,
Colorado, and Chris, Middle Mesa, New Mexico, along
with ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Matthew’s Episcopal
Church at 3888 27 1/2 Road, Grand Junction, Colorado on Friday,
September 25, 2015, at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests contributions be made to St. Matthew’s Episcopal
Church.
