Major Kenneth Powell
January 25, 1926 - November 3, 2015
Major Kenneth Powell is at
peace after complications
from a fall. He was
surrounded with his loving
family on November 3, 2015,
with the wonderful caring
team at HopeWest Hospice.
Ken was born in Ventura and
grew up in Ojai, California.
In January of 1944 he served
in the Navy with a honorable
discharge in July 1946 in WWII. Ken followed in his father’s
footsteps by joining the Highway Patrol. The 31 year journey
with the Colorado State Patrol was full of adventure, challenges
and a career that surrounded him by very special people
throughout his life and our families. He patrolled all over
Southwestern Colorado then moved to Denver to advance his
career.
Ken graduated from Northwestern University and moved his
way up in the ranks at Patrol Headquarters in Denver. Ken was a
member of the Elks Club for many years.
Throughout the years they enjoyed beautiful Colorado by
camping and golfing with their family. They decided to retire in
1985 when they moved back to Grand Junction. Luella and Ken
were together for almost 65 years of marriage until her passing a
little over a year ago.
They continued to enjoy this great community along with
camping in the winters in Arizona for years with their family.
Ken leaves behind three very supportive children, Constance
Powell Pitchford, Rex Powell and Dana Boldizsar and
grandchildren, Jess Powell and Bryce Powell.
He has always been a very supportive and loving husband,
father and grandfather. Throughout the years he has impacted
many lives with his ability to patiently teach and mentor in so
many ways. Our Smoky Bear is now at peace walking down
lovers lane with his sweetheart, Luella.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in
Ken’s name to St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation at 2635 North 7th
Street, Grand Junction Colorado 81501, or HopeWest Hospice
at 3090B North 12th Street, Grand Junction, Colorado 81506.
In the spring of 2016 we will bury his remains at the VA
Cemetery in Grand Junction next to his loving wife.
