Tony Vernon Alvarez was born Dec. 11, 1919, in Colorado and passed away Jan. 25, 2001.

Tony grew up dirt poor in the coal-mining town of Oak Creek.

As soon as he was old enough, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1941. He distinguished himself while fighting the Axis powers. Tony excelled in the Air Force and made a career of it. He retired in 1971 with the rank of master sergeant, the highest rank attainable for an enlisted man.

Tony was a loving friend and family man. He was always the first to help those in need and was always very generous. He would never go out of his way to advertise this. He had the softest spot in his heart for children as all of his great-nieces and great-nephews know.

Tony was a rebel of sorts, and to many larger than life. He was always the first to speak up, the first to speak his mind in spite of any opinion or sentiment to the contrary.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Alvarez; five sisters, Pearl, Mary, Molly, Esther and Virginia; a brother, Richard; three stepchildren by his previous wife, Ruth, who preceded him in death; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Internment was May 3, 2001, at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
