John M. Childress of Albuquerque died Oct. 11, 2000. He was 88.
John was born June 19, 1912, in Yampa. He graduated from high school in Steamboat Springs in 1931 and from Colorado State University in 1936 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering.
In 1939, John was appointed technical foreman engineer with the Civilian Conservation Corps. The following year he accepted the position of junior engineer at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver. Soon after, he became assistant engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation in Steamboat Springs.
In 1941, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, John applied for and received a commission in the Navy as an ensign. His naval service included three years duty in New Guinea and the South Pacific. At war's end, he resumed his career with the Bureau of Reclamation. In 1972, after 34 years of federal civil service, he retired.
John married Lucille Bell in 1975. They enjoyed traveling, golfing and were involved in Shriner's activities. John also enjoyed photography, electronics and woodworking.
He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, Masonic Lodge, Santa Fe Consistory and Ballut Abyad Shrine.
John is survived by his wife, Lucille; and a sister, Mira Somerville, of Amarillo, Texas.
A memorial service was held Oct. 16 at French Mortuary in Albuquerque. He was cremated.
