Harold W. (Hal) KOONCE died Dec. 20, 1983, of injuries sustained in a two-car accident on U.S. Highway 50, north of Delta.
A funeral Mass was said Dec.22 at St. Mary's Church in Montrose. Interment was in the family plot in the Eagle cemetery, with Fr. Joseph LEBERER and Fr. Patrick KENNEDY officiating.
He was born May 30, 1947, in Denver, the son of Harold W. KOONCE Sr. and Alice M. KOONCE. His boyhood was spent in Eagle, attending schools here.
After graduation, he attended the University of Wisconsin, receiving a bachelor's degree.
He later graduated with his juris doctoris degree from the University of Denver Law School. He was a member of Chi Psi fraternity.
KOONCE served in the United States Navy, with the rank of lieutenant, seeing active duty during the Vietnam conflict as communications officer aboard the USS America.
On Sept. 7, 1968, he was married in Madison, Wisc., to Patricia A. KROHN, who survives him with their three children, Nathan, Ryan and Anna.
The family moved to Montrose in 1979, where he practiced law, a member of the firm Mathis, Koonce and Reed.
He was a member of the Colorado and Montrose bar associations, and served on the State Judicial Nominating Commission. He served on the Montrose Board of Education and was a member of Kiwanis.
A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, KOONCE served as chairman of the finance committee of the parish council and was a member of the church choir. He was active in youth athletic leagues and the Boy Scout organization.
Also surviving are his parents; his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Norton KROHN of Madison; two brothers, Chris KOONCE, of Alder, Mont., and Steve KOONCE, of Louisville, Colo.; two sisters, Susan KOONCE-McKELVIE of Silver Spring, Ma.; and Ann KOONCE of Grand Junction.

Harold Winston "Hal" KOONCE, Jr., 2126 Essex, Montrose, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 1983, as the result of a two-car accident near the Delta-Mesa county line. He was 36.
Mr. KOONCE, a resident of Montrose since 1979, was an attorney in the law firm of Mathis, Koonce and Reed in Montrose.
He was born May 30, 1947, in Denver and spent his childhood and attended schools in Eagle. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1970, and from the University of Denver Law School in 1978.
He married Patricia A. "Pat" KROHN Sept. 7, 1968, in Madison, Wis. She survives.
Mr. KOONCE served in the U.S.Navy as a lieutenant-communications officer on the USS America from 1970-1972.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he was on the Parish Council, finance chairman and was active on the church choir.
He was a former member of the RE-1J School Board in Montrose, chairman of the board of directors of Cub Scouts Pack 490, and a member of the Colorado and Montrose Bar Associations, the Colorado Judicial Selection Committee, the Montrose Chamber of Commerce, the Black Canyon Kiwanis Club and the Chi Si fraternity in college. He also played on a basketball team and coached a youth basketball team.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his parents, Harold, Sr., and Alice KOONCE of Eagle; one daughter, Anna Megan KOONCE, age four; two sons, Nathan Michael, 11, and Ryan Christopher, 9; two brothers, Chris of Alder,Mont., and Steve of Louisville; two sisters, Susan KOONCE-McKELVIE of Silver Spring, Md., and Ann KOONCE of Grand Junction; and parents-in-law,Mr. and Mrs. Norton KROHN of Madison, Wis.
