JOHN HENRY COWDEN
John COWDEN was born at Osage City, Kansas, April 24, 1902 to Mr. and Mrs. Fred COWDEN.
When he was six months old, John's parents moved to Eagle County, Colorado with their two children, Marguerite and John.
He spent his boyhood in the county, and as a young man, was working at Tulsa, Okla., when he met and married Bertha WORLEY of Stillwell, Okla. Feb. 23, 1920.
The young couple returned to Eagle County in 1921, where they raised their family of four children.
Although Mr. COWDEN lost a leg in an accident at work years ago, he wasn't handicapped, and spent his life ranching in the Eagle, Gypsum and Edwards communities.
In 1942 Mr. and Mrs. COWDEN bought the Torval NORGAARD ranch on lake Creek. They were living there when both Mr. and Mrs. COWDEN were seriously injured when their pickup was hit by a truck a few years ago. Since then John spent most of his remaining years in hospitals. He died at his home in Gypsum June 30.
Mr. COWDEN was preceded in death by his parents and a son, John Henry, Jr., who was killed in World War II on January 16, 1945.
Surviving Mr. COWDEN are his wife, Bertha of Gypsum; three children: Cleo ROBERTS of Grants, Colo., James D. of Kremmling and Bob of Pueblo; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
