Gertrude Caroline Farrell died Aug. 17, 2000 at Yampa Valley Medical Center. She was 87.
Gertrude was the granddaughter of two pioneering families who homesteaded in Routt County in the late 1800s. Her paternal grandfather, Angus Campbell, homesteaded the Deep Creek area and her maternal grandfather, Henry McPhee, homesteaded the Elk River area on what is now the Fetcher Ranch.
Gertrude was born Aug. 5, 1913, to Isabelle Elizabeth (McPhee) and Grover Campbell at the McPhee Ranch near the Elk River (what is now the Brown Ranch). She grew up in the Deep Creek area and had fond memories of neighborhood parties and dances at the old Moonhill schoolhouse. She met her future husband, Joseph A. Farrell, at one of those dances. They raised three children in Steamboat Springs.
Gertrude worked at Routt Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1977. She volunteered for many years at the Extended Care Center and was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church where she also volunteered. Her family was her greatest joy.
She is survived by a son, Paddy Farrell; a daughter, Chris Berg; eight grandchildren, Tammy Herfurtner, Raymond Farrell, Shaunna Watterson, Kelly Leon, Todd Litton, Glen Farrell, Monti Curtis and Jason Berg; and 13 great-grandchildren, Abby, Danny, David, Emily, Rebecca, Brianna, Andrew, Diane, Joe, Miranda, Maggie, Matt and Hannah.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Jessie Powell and Betty Hambright; a daughter, Margaret Litton; and a great-grandson, Jared Herfurtner.
She was buried at the Steamboat Springs Cemetery next to her husband.
