EAGLE ACCIDENT VICTIM STRUCK BY PICKUP TRUCK DIES AT VAIL HOSPITAL.
An 85-year-old Eagle resident died Monday evening after being struck by a pickup truck near his home.
Leonard Arthur PING of 120 Capitol St., who suffered internal injuries, was pronounced dead by Eagle County Coroner Donna MEINEKE at 8 p.m. Monday at Vail Valley Medical Center, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The accident at the corner of Second and Howard streets occurred about 6:30 p.m., the CSP said.
According to officers, a pickup driven by Daron Jeffrey MILLER, 16, of 108 Howard St. was traveling eastbound on Second Street and turned left onto Howard Street. The pickup struck PING, who was walking with his dog in the roadway, and knocked the victim about 30 feet from the point of impact, the patrol said. The vehicle came to a stop after the collision. The dog died at the accident scene.
The victim received initial emergency treatment from members of Eagle Community Ambulance Association and Eagle Volunteer Fire Department. He was transported by ambulance to the Vail hospital.
The incident remained under investigation, the CSP said, at The Enterprise deadline yesterday.

Graveside services for Leonard Arthur PING, an 85-year-old lifetime resident of Eagle, were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Sunset View Cemetery.
Mr. PING died Monday, April 18, at Vail Valley Medical Center, after he was injured in a pedestrian-pickup accident at the corner of Second and Howard Streets in Eagle.
Mr. PING was born July 10, 1902, in Eagle, the son of Otis and Minnie Wedmore PING. He spent his entire life in the community.
He was a former longtime janitor at the First Bank of Eagle County, and was also a hobbyist photographer for many years.
Surviving are two sisters, Garnet PING and Ruby DeGRAW, both of Eagle.
The Rev. Melanie DOWNS, pastor of the Eagle and Gypsum Community United Methodist churches, officiated at Wednesday's services. Arrangements were by Farnum-Richardson Mortuary.
