Gerrit John Brink, 94, of Dayton, WY, formerly of Plankinton, SD passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016 at his home. Funeral Services are 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Plankinton. A Committal Service with Military Honors will follow at Mizpah Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 18, 2016 with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service. Mount Funeral Home of Plankinton is assisting with arrangements.
Gerrit John Brink was born on March 14, 1922 to John A. and Nancy (Lucas) Brink in Platte, SD.
He attended school in Platte and went on to serve his country in the US Army from 1941 – 1945. On June 7, 1946 Gerrit was united in marriage to Lena Marie Groeber at the Aurora Center Parsonage in Stickney, SD. He worked as a brick mason and was a devoted law enforcement officer, serving as Aurora County Sheriff for 25 years while living in Plankinton, SD. He was elected President of the SD Peace Officers’ Association, was an Elder at the former First Presbyterian Church in Plankinton and a member of VFW Aurora Cty. #6554.
He fulfilled a lifelong dream when he and Lena built their log home in Steamboat Springs, CO. Gerrit passed his love of nature and the outdoors on to his family as they enjoyed boating, camping and snowmobiling together. He loved to gather wood, feed the birds and a squirrel he called “Nutty”. He and Lena also enjoyed
traveling the country in their motor home visiting family and friends.
Grateful for having shared in Gerrit’s life: his wife of nearly 70 years, Lena Brink of Dayton, WY; six children: Nancy Brink (Howard) Page of Dayton, WY, Gary (Jessica) Brink of Bandon, OR, Larry Dean Brink of Plankinton, SD, Patricia (Knut) Finnevolden of Enfield, CT, Donna (John) Miller of Plankinton, SD and Debra (John) Moro of Joseph, OR; 20 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; two brothers: Robert (Judy) Brink of Cold Spring, MN and Darold (Carolyn) Brink of Clearwater, FL; five sistersinlaw: Darlene, Norma, Dee, Shirley and Linda; along with many nieces and nephews. Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Herman, Lawrence, Donald, Harold, Marion and Marvin; four sisters: Dora, Wilma, Effie and Evelyn; two siblings in infancy; and a grandson, Brandon Lee Brink.
